WHEN YOU GET A NEW BOSS, THE PERSON WITH THE NEW JOB IS YOU.
By my dear friend and CEO Coach Debra Benton
How do you ‘go on board’ when you’re already there?
When you get a new boss you are the unknown. Even though your job position hasn’t changed, you have to take the same action as if you are going on board a new position.
When nearly 10% loose their jobs the remaining 90% get shuffled around ending up with different reporting relationships.
Before you meet your new boss take some time and Monday morning quarterback the mistakes you made with your previous boss. Think about and write down what you should have done differently then plan to remedy past errors.
Provide positive support even if you feel you should have gotten the job. You didn’t. How you handle yourself at this standpoint might get you the job next time.
Welcome the person the same way you might a new neighbor. Invite to lunch or offer to bring sandwiches in to have time to talk and get to know each other
Ask and listen to learn how to best work together; don’t guess. Find out his or her first 30-90 day agenda; the most important issues or problems to solve. Here’s an occasion to ask basic, maybe even stupid-sounding questions. When one executive was asked, how do you prefer to communicate: face to face, telephone, email? He said, ‘I like yellow post-it notes left on my desk so when I return to my office I can scan them and see what I need to respond to.”
Make the impression you want your new boss to have of you. Show confidence in who you are and what you bring to the table. From the first time you meet ensure the message you send is the one you intend with your appearance, manner, and comportment. If you have self-doubt, the person will cut you off in a heartbeat. You’ll never really recover if you misstep here.
Tell your new boss about your job duties, responsibilities, your team, and scope of work as it fits in with the rest of the department/company. Seek out how he or she views changes in your role. (Don’t criticize your former boss.)
Delve into Google, Facebook, Linkedin, or other internet sources. People put information on themselves they want you to know. Keep in mind, your new manager is likely reading your profile and updates as well.
Observe and study how he or she interacts and reacts to colleagues, subordinates, and superiors. In a non-judgmental fashion look for consistencies and inconsistencies; check out what works and doesn’t work with the individual.
After you understand what your new boss wants to achieve and avoid, do something successful and worthwhile around it. Sticking to your old bosses agenda is a mistake. There is a new sheriff downtown. Do more than the person expects; demonstrate initiative without requiring further direction. Come in with, “This is what we should do and here’s how I think we should do it.” Don’t pester with, “Now what should I do?”
And, stay in touch with your old boss. If things don’t go well, he or she might be a source of good advice – or a resource for ways to get out.
You might ask, “Isn’t it the boss’s job to get to know me?” Yes, it is. And he or she is getting to know you by how you get to know her.
I Don’t know: The State of Mind That Leads To Discovery

I Don’t know: The State of Mind That Leads To Discovery
“I was gratified to be able to answer promptly. I said, “I don’t know.”” – Mark Twain
Have you ever become aware of your mind the moment that it truly becomes stumped with a new situation in life? The split second where you become utterly empty, then the quick realization comes that you really “don’t know“. If you have ever stayed very alert and observed your mind, you will see that you are in a very beautiful space.
A mind that simply says “I don’t know”, that doesn’t then try to seek understanding with all its current knowledge and past memories. A mind that doesn’t try to cover up its lack of knowing, becomes extremely quiet and therefore very open. If you pay attention your mind becomes incredibly alert and sensitive. A sensitive mind is an intelligent mind. An open mind is ready to truly learn, to learn about something for the first time without any prejudices to color the experience. A mind that has a similar quality to when you where a child and approached life with eyes of wonder.
The reason I love to live in foreign countries is because I try to live my life in the moment, and consequently in a foreign environment I always find my mind saying “I don’t know”. I recognize that awareness and try to stay in that space so that what ever I am experiencing becomes an amazing learning experience. I try and look at it like its my first time even if on the surface it looks familiar. A mind that thinks it knows always functions on conclusions. You experience situations and circumstances in life and your mind says I already know, then you cease to learn because you already feel you know. I feel that a mind that lives in conclusions ends up living a very superficial life, you quit trying to penetrate things to their depth, you quit looking for beauty and meaning.
My grandfather who lives in Mexico is not very educated, he leads a very simple life in a small village. He may not be an intellectual but he Is very intelligent because he still approaches the world with eyes of wonder. He still has a very alert and sensitive mind that is not bogged down with knowledge from hundreds of books, life is still his classroom. Everyday he spends hours walking, he says “its not that I like walking, my body begs me too” and on our walks he is aware of his whole environment, he gives his attention totally to something, therefore he sees beauty all around him.
We make dozens of stops on our way to the store and one of them is just to watch a bird dancing on a tree branch, he will give his total attention to it, and say “look how happy he is, how beautiful, I wonder where he is going to go next”. Have you ever gave your whole attention to seeing a squirrel playing? To just watch and observe it totally without verbalizing or giving it a label? Seeing something simply is one of the most difficult things in the world. I think that to give the purity of your attention to something is one of most loving acts one can do.
Living in Costa Rica I went on a “Silence retreat“ with my friends, for several days we could not communicate verbally. If we needed to communicate something we would write it on the chalk board. We would go on little walks with someone and explore the beautiful nature around us, but you could not be like “ hey! look that’s a beautiful flower don’t you think ?”. So then all you would have are two people in an amazing location taking in all the sights and sounds, just a deep communion with nature. Not being able to talk can be very difficult at first, but after a few hours you will see that your mind becomes very quiet and the incessant inner chatter become less and less. When you quit trying to verbalize everything you experience you will see that you are able to see something simply. In seeing something simply you may notice things you never noticed before because you always had a mind that said “don’t look you already know..remember?”
So I would like to encourage anyone to go on their own “silence retreat”. A few hours is great but the more time you can afford to do, the more discovery’s I think you will make. Go on a walk through the forest with your loved one, be in complete silence, then after your walk share your experience. What did you observe in your surroundings? What did you observe in yourself? Did you learn anything new? Try to recognize that state of mind that “doesn’t know”, because that is a mind that will reveal and teach you something new. Hope you enjoyed my post, get out there and enjoy your life, practice what feels good to you, don’t listen to me after all I don’t know

The Essentials To Stress Management: To Help You Achieve Harmony in Mind, Body, And Spirit
The Essentials To Stress Management: To Help You Achieve Harmony in Mind, Body, And Spirit
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.” - Albert Einstein
No doubt we live in stressful times. Everything seems to be progressing at exponential rates. Everything except our inner being and ability to cope with all of our demands. The stress we deal with is both physiological and psychological. Stress is the result of what happens to us when our daily challenges are greater then our ability to deal with them. Everyone is in pursuit of happiness and stress is a major road block on that journey.
First we will discuss stress and its impact on our lives, and then we will hopefully propose several actions we can take to overcome it. To have a healthy happy lifestyle I think a holistic approach is needed, but as the majority of our problems are psychological and rooted in the mind they ultimately cannot be resolved without transcending the mind.
This is an arduous individual journey in gaining sufficient understanding to eventually go beyond thought (mind). Going beyond thought takes you to a place of immense inner space, you create sufficient distance to see clearly. To see something in its entirety ends conflict, no more effort in trying to change, a whole new dimension of action. Almost all of our problems exist because there is no clarity through which to understand them.
Having a healthy body and mind gives the possibility of being able to go deep within ones self, to be able to embark on an incredible journey of self discovery and personal truths. But before we are able to explore higher dimensions of growth we need to have a healthy body and mind that is free of stress. Without a healthy body you will not be able to meditate and practice yoga. Without a healthy mind you will lack the proper understanding to perceive higher dimensions of fulfillment that the body alone can’t provide. Life is an immensely fulfilling experience if you are able to experience all the dimensions it provides, in both the material and spiritual realms. To only live in one is to deny the richness that existence provides.
How each of us experiences and handles stress depends on our level of understanding to perceive what is happening to us.
Some of the major stressors include:
- Dealing with major life changes: getting married, graduating school, moving to a new location, suffering an illness, loosing your job, death, etc.
- Environmental stressors: political issues, pollution, crime, our living conditions, etc.
- Work related stressors: deadlines, promotions, downsizing, dealing with the boss, etc.
- Relationship stressors: family, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, kids, etc.
- Social stressors: friends and your need for a social life.
- Spiritual stressors: Searching for meaning and purpose in your life.
- Fear: fear of failure, fear of your health and safety, fear of loneliness, fear of success, etc.
As you can see being alive is no easy thing, but if you continually work on gaining understanding of yourself and the world, life can a beautiful journey of growth and fulfillment. If you are ever to be in a position to dive deep into the mystery of our existence, stress is going to have to be something you observe within yourself, start to understand it, then eventually with your understanding go beyond it.
Stress is a very serious issue that if constantly stimulated leads to the production of hormones that are detrimental to the cardiovascular system, immune system, increases the likelihood of stroke, cancer, infections, and other chronic diseases.
4 Signs of Being Overwhelmed By Your Stress:
- Your stress is being compounded: you are constantly reacting to the infinite demands of your outside environment that you begin to suppress everything into your unconscious mind. You can feel the inner tension of telling your self “I deal with it later”. Your inner space becomes an ever growing to do list.
- You start feeling that you are simply overwhelmed and incapable of coping.
- Life has lost its joy; you feel a sense of numbness and that life is dull.
- You are never at peace or able to experience the beauty of silence; anxiousness is now your normal state of being.
Some of The Hormones That Affect Our Well Being:
- Cortisol: It is usually referred to as the “stress hormone” as it is involved in response to stress and anxiety. Under normal circumstances cortisol can be useful in returning one to homeostasis after stress. But too much will increase blood pressure and blood sugar, and reduces immune responses. Increased production can lead to destroying the health of muscle and bone; it can delay healing and normal cell regeneration. Impaired digestion and lower mental functioning have also been linked to this hormone.
- Oxytocin: This has been referred to as the hormone of love as it fosters positive feelings of calmness, connection, and increased sexual receptivity. The body’s natural level will be lowered by being constantly stressed out. Activities like yoga, meditation, exercise, deeply caring for something, and an intimate relationship promote the production of this hormone.
- Estrogen: While estrogens are present in both men and women, they are usually present at significantly higher levels in women of reproductive age. Estrogen also helps in the development of female’s physical characteristics and regulating the menstrual cycle. In males are thought to be necessary for a healthy libido.
- Testosterone: It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid helping build muscle mass and bone density. In men, testosterone plays a key role in the over all well-being and health.
One can see the importance of having a normal healthy hormonal balance as it has a direct impact on our sense of well being. Repeated stimulation of the stress hormones has been shown to lower the levels of serotonin in the body, and serotonin is thought to be one of the primary chemicals responsible for our good moods.
Approaches and Tools to Achieving Harmony in Mind, Body, Spirit:
- Focused breathing: I practice several techniques referred to as Pranyama. It is often translated as control of the life force. Pranyama is a Sanskrit word meaning “restraint of the prana or breath”. The word is composed of two Sanskrit words, Prana (life force) and “ayama”, to suspend or restrain. There are several techniques which should be practiced with great care, and the advanced pranayama techniques should be practiced under the guidance of a teacher.
- Meditation: The beauty of proper meditation is that it helps you create immense distance in your inner space. It gives you perspective, your level of consciousness changes. It helps you create distance between your thoughts and the witness who watches your thoughts. The problem for most is that they remain to close to their thoughts, being close means being identified. This is why psychoanalysis never actually solves the causes of your problems, it may help you function more efficiently in society, but you remain on the same level. Your problem is in your thinking and you try to solve it with thinking, still remains within the field of thought. Meditation gives you vertical growth, it gives you a bird’s eye perspective to see your problems, awareness to freely observe, free of conditioning. You become an impartial observer, being impartial you will see the causes, you gain understanding. There is no need to solve the problem, you just need more understanding. It simply exists because you lack sufficient understanding, not enough awareness. That’s why we are always able to give someone else great advice, we are far from the problem, we are impartial, we have clarity to see. The person with the problem is too close to it, to identified, he will say “easy for you to say, this isn’t your problem”. Meditation helps you create the distance for you to see clearly.
- Progressive Muscle relaxation: Progressive Muscle Relaxation is the tensing and then relaxing each muscle group of the body, one group at a time. Tense up a group of muscles, tense hard but don’t strain, and hold for about 5-10 seconds. Release the tension from the muscles all at once. Stay relaxed for 10 – 20 seconds. Have fun with it, experiment and find a routine that works for you.
- Yoga: Yoga is Sanskrit word which essential means “union with god”. While in the west it is mainly practiced for its physical benefits, it should be practiced in conjunction with meditation. Ancient Yogis practiced yoga to cultivate a body that would be able to meditate for extremely long periods of time. Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility, strength, posture, breathing, calmness, concentration, and mood.
- Tai Chi
- Massage Therapy: I love getting Thai massages, I leave with the feeling like I just got a “tune up”. Massages can increase circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs. Helps reduce spasms, cramping, and recovery time. Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body’s natural defense system.
- Visualization: You can use creative visualization to create a relaxing internal ambiance: Relaxing and Solving Problems Through The Power Of Your Imagination
- Play time: Be a kid again, remember how good it felt?
- Aroma Therapy: Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful as it has a direct connection to the part of the brain that regulates mood- the limbic system. Essential oil baths are a great way to unwind at the end of a hectic day.
- Daily Affirmations: Positive affirmations can be a very powerful tool used to change how each individual thinks and feels about themselves. Read “Top 7 myths about Affirmations” by my friend Nancy.
Soul Food: Foods and diets conducive to a healthy way of living.
- Mediterranean foods: The Mediterranean diet comes from countries like Italy and Greece. It’s high in foods that provide health benefits like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, fish and olive oil. Go to your local book store and unleash the “Greek” in you by experimenting with a few recipes. The food truly is tasty and good for you.
- Red Wine: Red wine may help prevent blood clots and reduce the blood vessel damage caused by fat deposits. Red wine is a particularly rich source of antioxidants flavonoid phenolics. Drink responsibly, this is not a license to drink a bottle of wine everyday ?
- Fish: Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that provides a range of health benefits. People who regularly eat fish have a lower incidence of depression (depression is linked to low levels of omega 3 fatty acids in the brain).
- Whole Grains: Whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by decreasing cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood coagulation.
- Super foods: Top 10 Super Food, dark chocolate, coconut oil, cinnamon, turmeric, green tea, ginger.
- Mood Foods: Tuna, turkey, eggs, wheat germ.
- Foods that increase serotonin: cereal, bread, pasta, oatmeal, walnuts, salmon, lentils.
Resting and Exercise: To have a healthy mind and body means you need to have an adequate amount of rest and exercise.
Resting: Make sure to everyday take some time to stop what ever you are doing and just rest. Enjoy some silence.
Sleep: Is the unconscious form of restoring the mind and body. Make sure to get sufficient deep sleep. When we have dreams it means that we are still carrying all our mental activity into our sleep. During our day we did not attend to all our thoughts so they continue in our sleep. Having too much mental activity will not allow you to fall into the deep rejuvenating deep sleep that your body and mind needs. Make sure you wind down and calm your mind and attend to and settle any thoughts you had in the day.
Insomnia Fighting Tips:
- Don’t bring work home.
- Make sleep a priority.
- Relax to binaural beats.
- Have a proper sleep ambiance.
- Sleep rituals: by making a ritual you program your mind and body to prepare for sleep.
- Sleep aids: White noise machines, ear plugs, melatonin, valerian root, hops, kava, lemon balm, chamomile, saint johns wort.
Workouts: Walk, climb, garden, jump, jog, spin, dance, stretch. Make it a priority to get some type of physical exercise everyday. Be a kid again, remember how good it felt?
Cultivating a healthy mind: Like I mentioned earlier eventually the state of mind we are actually seeking is a state of “no mind”. A mind that is incredibly quiet, incredibly aware. But before we are able to reach this state will need to cultivate right ways of thinking, healthy ways of thinking, to be able to use our mind to go beyond it.
- Optimism: Learn to look at the bright side of things, there is always a lesson to be learned.
- Be present to actually see “what is” not “what should be”: read “Stuck In The Middle: Living In The Land of Observation“

To Be In Reality Stop Fantasizing
To Be In Reality Stop Fantasizing
“People are so busy dreaming the American Dream, fantasizing about what they could be or have a right to be, that they’re all asleep at the switch. Consequently we are living in the Age of Human Error.” Florence King
I think it is safe to say that many of us live in a world of fantasy. We use entertainment as a way to escape and fantasize; obviously we receive pleasure from it. Let’s briefly go into why we fantasize and the implications it has on our lives. You need to have an incredibly sensitive mind so that you can observe that you are always adding or deleting something, which is to constantly fantasize. Constantly fantasizing leads to a corrupt mind, a mind that is disorderly and always in conflict. Whenever you mother your fantasies whether they are sexual, spiritual, material, financial, emotional, relational, it causes you to lust after them, to fight and struggle with them.
Anything you see is because of the fantasies you mother, if you learn to drop your fantasies you will see something as it truly is. What causes us to fantasize? If you go into it deeply, you will see that your greed and fear is responsible. Greed and fear are usually the causes behind how most people react to life. Don’t just read this and accept it, go into it your self, investigate it. Most never go into it deeply; never understand why they are greedy, why they are fearful, where does fear arise from? Why does it arise? I will go deeper into the nature of fear in another post, but this something that each of us needs to go into on our own.
If you are able to see something clearly, it it’s entirety, it will end conflict. So then the question becomes how do we learn to see ourselves and the world clearly, free of our conditioning and prejudices, is it even possible? I go into this briefly in my post, “Stuck In The Middle: Living In The Land of Observation“, and “How To See The World With New Eyes“, which hopefully can assist you in understanding why we fantasize.
Fantasizing leads one to always have certain expectations; it gives continuity to our experiences of pleasure and pain. You will come to see that anything that happens because of fantasizing is not worth happening.
To fantasize means to always label something in your environment, to not label is to see something with a childlike quality, free of prejudices. Without fantasying you become stress free because you don’t carry nearly as much emotional baggage in your memories. When you are extremely attentive and aware you will see that you do not create an image in your mind, you don’t fantasize about what your are observing. You are simply there seeing what is, just a state of pure being. You are whole because you are not separating your self from it. Whenever you see something through the image you create, you create space, you create a division within yourself. This division causes you to be fragmented, to be fragmented is to be in conflict, your understanding is never complete.
Just observe your sexual fantasies, they are never as fulfilling as the actual act, because it creates space, it removes you from reality. They keep you from being present in the act which is a purely physical act. Even in the act you are not present, you are adding your own juice to it, you are trying to create an image (memory) for later. But if you dropped your fantasy, where present, you would have an experience that is incredibly physically intense; you would experience what actually “is”. But we don’t want to experience what “is” we want to create a memory because we are unsure when we will have the experience again.
If you really observe the movement of your sexual desires, you will see that your sexual energy is the most powerful energy you posses because it has the power to move you, to take action. When you learn to drop your sexual fantasies you will see your energy return to its normal state, and therefore be available for when action is needed in your everyday life. Yet most of us constantly waste our energy in fantasizing, and therefore when a situation presents itself we do not have the energy to be aware and be present. It requires great energy to have a sensitive awake mind, once you experience this you will see how important it is to stop fantasizing.
